TNReport: State Income Tax Not Unconstitutional, Says TFT
Elizabeth Wright, who heads the group Tennesseans for Fair Taxation, which advocates establishing a state income tax, disputes the notion that a tax on personal income is currently illegal under the state’s guiding document. According to the Tennessee Constitution, “(t)he legislature shall have power to levy a tax upon income derived from stocks and bonds that are not taxed ad valorem.” Wright says there’s nothing in that language to prohibit the state from levying taxes on “other kinds of income, or on your personal income.” www.tnreport.com
